When a crisis occurs, immediate assistance can change a person's life and even impact an entire family.

Rico, a member of the First Aid Response Unit, has been volunteering for over 11 years. In Rico's perspective, providing first aid assistance is not just about helping the person in front of them, but also about connecting with the people closely associated with the injured individual. Rico recalls an incident during duty where he encountered a father who had injured himself while cycling. The father had minor scrapes, and the child by his side was extremely worried about his well-being. Rico and his partner, upon assessing the situation, took care of the father's wounds while the other attended to the child, engaging in conversation and explaining the father's condition to alleviate their concerns. In the end, smiles were restored.

With the increasing popularity of cycling as a recreational activity among Hong Kong residents, more cycling paths have been established. During holidays, these paths are often crowded with people, leading to conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians and a significant increase in cycling accidents. Research data shows that there were nearly 3,000 cycling accidents in 2021, the highest in the past 20 years, resulting in eight fatalities.

To enhance public awareness of road safety and promote cycling safety, as well as provide immediate assistance in case of accidents, the Hong Kong Red Cross launched the first aid service along the Tuen Mun to Ma On Shan cycling path in November 2020. Currently, the main service areas include the Tuen Ma Cycling Path and the Tseung Kwan O Cycling Path, where first aid services are provided to the public on Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 6 pm.
